Last February, a delegation from MUNUSAL took part at the HNMUN (Harvard National Model UN). They had a very productive week representing Mali in the several Committees where this country was represented. Through strongly contributing to the elaboration of resolutions and working papers and by lobbying day and night - ;) – the delegates had a wonderful time and showed that MUNUSAL rocks!
After this activity, the delegation spent a week in NY.
Thanks to GIMUN, MUNUSAL’s partner at EMUNNET, the delegates could participate in a couple of very enriching and fruitful activities. The first of them was a visit to the EU delegation at the UN and the second was a meeting with Mr. Jose María Caballero from the Spanish Mission towards the UN.
At the meeting with Mr. Peter Schweiger (Head of the EU delegation at the UN), the students had the chance to hear a brief introduction about the functioning of both institutions and then a question & answer time was entertained.
Amongst the topics debated, there are how the delegation is getting adapted to the new Treaty of Lisbon, the Role of the EU on gender issues and the different groups and alliances the EU is part of were. As some of the students were not Spanish, not even European, the questions were diverse and the debate very interesting. All students reported that after the meeting they had a better knowledge of the EU and that some helpful ideas were taken along the time we spent with Mr. Schweiger.
At the meeting with the Spanish mission, the students were encouraged to apply for positions and internships at both at the UN and the mission itself and they were informed by Mr. Caballero about the hot topics the Spanish mission is currently working at. After that, the ambassador received the students and offered us a short tour through the different rooms and offices. This meeting was very helpful and interesting as well, students said.
Javier Sierra, president of MUNUSAL, expressed his wish for repeating the experience next year when a new delegation from the University of Salamanca comes to the US to take part at the HNMUN.

Dear friends,
I am extraordinary pleased to welcome you to the third edition of the Model United Nations of the University of Salamanca. The oldest still existing university of Spain will host more than 100 future leaders from throughout the world that will gather at the birthplace of international law to discuss issues that cover all continents. Their care for the future of our world will translate into a common spirit and into lifelong friendships that will make our world a better place.
The innovative approach of MUNUSAL incorporates not only the Security Council, the Human Rights Council, the Economic and Social Council as well as the Department of Public Information, but also the Ibero-American Summit as well as the African Union. It is the first time that the important and promising African Union is simulated at an international Model United Nations conference.
Tomorrow’s brilliant leaders will travel far to unite in Salamanca for five days to find solutions to some of the most daunting current challenges. As the year 2010 celebrates the International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures, the University of Salamanca offers the ideal space to host this significant event that will contribute tremendously towards establishing a new global sense of community.
A carefully selected team of competent organizers and chairs is working extremely hard in making MUNUSAL 2010 a great success.
It is a privilege for me to invite you to the historic and beautiful city of Salamanca to address today’s challenges and to enjoy the unique atmosphere of Salamanca!
Yours sincerely,
Conrad Rein
Secretary-General
Model United Nations University of Salamanca
After nearly a month’s course of Rules of Procedures by the student association MUNUSAL, it finally sent the first Model United Nations (MUN) delegation abroad of year 09-10 to Bonn, Germany, for the week long BIMUN conference from November 29th to December 4th.The delegation consisted of 10 students of the University of Salamanca, however from different countries: Spain, Germany, France, Belgium, Norway, UK, China, and South Korea. From the diverse backgrounds of the single delegation of MUNUSAL, it can be easily inferred that BIMUN 2009 was a grand international party. BIMUN 2009 had 170 participants from 50 nations, even including Afghanistan, Palestine, Egypt, Cameroon, Peru, etc. It was a precious opportunity for people from different parts of the world to mingle and meet and greet each other. And perspectives with different cultures and viewpoints contributed to the final success of the conference.
Bonn, which was the former capital of the Federal Republic of Germany and now is host to sixteen different UN organisations and has the proud moniker of “Germany’s United Nations city”, is a perfect place to host the MUN conference. The UN campus, which is the symbol of Bonn, offered ideal working conditions and a synergistic environment. In BIMUN this year, there were six different committees: General Assembly, Security Council, United Nations Environment Program, International Court of Justice, International Labour Conference and Council of the European Union.
The topics discussed ranged from environmental governance, economic crisis, counter terrorism, energy security to gender equality and improvement of education, covering the major issues of the world nowadays. Delegates of different nations negotiated with each other, stressing requirements, defending interests and seeking alliances, with the final objective to reach an agreement among all. However, a final resolution satisfying the whole international community was no easy task to fulfil because of the various interests of different countries, which is exactly the same as the real United Nations.
Compromises had to be made, and what’s the most important, trust and confidence should be set up if we really want to live up to the expectations for UN’s effectiveness and make the consensus. During this process, an overall knowledge of the country represented as well as an international outlook is essential for the negotiation. Besides, a good command of English is also of crucial importance for the communication among people speaking different languages. Most of the students of MUNUSAL delegation are beginners for the MUN conference. However, with a clear mind of Rules of Procedures taught by the association before and also the simulation of MUN during the courses helping the students to put the knowledge into practice, the delegates of MUNUSAL felt a lot easier for BIMUN and had all done very good job.
Delegates of BIMUN had a notably full schedule. Not only did they attend the committee session during the day (sometimes 6 hours a day), but also they had various extra activities, e.g.: the city tour, visit to the Town Hall and Germany Museums and also the International Lounge, a big party that displayed the typical things of different countries brought by the students. And the night life was also wonderful. From Monday to Friday, there was party every night. It was always interesting to see how different the delegates were with the casual clothes and even gorgeous dresses in the bar at night, dancing, drinking and talking, while during the day, all dressed in suits and were quite serious about the discussion. So everyone definitely got fruitful experiences from BIMUN!
Although BIMUN has ended, our own MUN, the MUNUSAL is approaching. With the strong influence of our delegation at BIMUN, a lot of students have already shown interests in participating in MUNUSAL. With the efforts and preparation of the organizers for MUNUSAL, it is absolutely certain that the MUNUSAL will be a huge success. Let’s all expect it!
